This video looks at Detail 3, Sheet D3 in the retrofit guideline ICC 1300/FEMA P-1100 Vulnerability Based Seismic Assessment and Retrofit of One and Two-Story Dwellings. It looks at a detail that shows a 6″ Simpson Heavy Duty Screw that is virtually impossible to install as shown. Simpson Strong-Tie, the manufacturer of these screws, requires dead-center placement into the narrow side of the floor joist and hand-held drill motors are not adequate enough to place them dead center as required. Without a centering jig, this is almost impossible to do when access is adequate and almost impossible to do in tight crawl spaces where access is minimal. This is one area where this guideline is deficient in that it does not tell the installer how to build the details shown. If contractors are not given some guidance the Connectors will be installed incorrectly and the retrofit can fail.
