From the Simpson website, they stated PHD-5 HD anchor bolt nut should be finger-tight plus 1/2 turn.  Do you follow their recommendation?  What is the reason behind such a loose torque?  Thank you.

From Simpson website: "For holdowns, per ASTM test standards, anchor bolt nut should be finger-tight plus 1⁄₃ to 1⁄₂ turn with a hand wrench, with consideration given to possible future wood shrinkage. Care should be taken to not over-torque the nut. Impact wrenches should not be used."

I left out that I am going to use dry lumber, so shrinkage should be minimal.  Should I still finger-tight + 1/2 turn?  If not, what is your recommended torque for the 5/8" anchor nut?

We just tighten them the same way we would tighten a spark plug and use a ratchet and very deep socket.  Loose nuts on hold downs cause slip and should be avoided.  I have no idea why they recommend this except I guess they thought they needed to say something.
