Seismic retrofits of residential and commercial properties include:
- a detailed written evaluation of the building's ability to resist a major earthquake
- an easily understood description of recommended improvements with reasons for these improvements explained and exact costs of these improvements broken down in a step-by-step manner.
- a detailed drawing showing exact locations of recommended shear panels, bolts and other hardware
- construction of the retrofit which includes:
- attachment of the mudsill to the foundation using seismic retrofit bolts and other retrofit-specific hardware
- bracing of cripple walls using high grade plywood panels with special nailing
- attachment of the floor framing to the mudsill or top of the cripple wall using specially designed shear transfer ties and other retrofit-specific components
- other miscellaneous components of a full retrofit as deemed necessary following initial inspection of building

Informative presentations by Howard Cook
Howard Cook of Bay Area Retrofit speaks before professional groups and is especially popular at real estate and insurance office meetings. He uses retrofit hardware and construction props to
explain the components of seismic retrofit in a humorous and easy going manner.
His goal is to educate industry professionals about retrofit and personal safety based on his experiences as a Residential Earthquake Damage Inspector for FEMA and an engineer trained retrofit contractor. He has spoken at meetings with the Berkeley Board of Realtors, the Contra Costa Board of Realtors, the American Institute of Architects, the Oakland Building Department, the American Society of Home Inspectors, and many other professional groups.
